Lately, I’ve found that some of my most meaningful conversations haven’t started with a story or a complaint…but with a simple question on a little card.
Question cards have become a regular feature in my life, and I’ve been loving the genuine connection they spark. At a recent dinner I hosted, I placed a stack in the centre of the table. One by one, we took turns answering. Nothing too deep or dramatic but somehow, the cards created space for honesty, laughter, and moments of unexpected vulnerability.
My partner and I started asking each other questions early in our relationship. From light-hearted to reflective questions, they’ve helped us to learn more about each other and stay connected even after a busy week, while we are driving somewhere or in the evenings in between our nightly routine.
Reconnect with others
Something special happens when you pause to ask and answer a thoughtful question. It opens the door to stories you’ve never heard, memories you’d forgotten, or feeling you didn’t realize you needed to share. It could even be an opportunity for you to gently ask the questions you haven’t had the courage to ask yet.
Psychologists Arthur and Elaine Aron explored this in their famous “36 Questions to Fall in Love” study. They found that answering personal questions not only deepens emotional bonds, but also builds trust, even between strangers.
So, image what might shift if we asked more meaningful or playful questions in our existing relationships, weekly or even daily.
Reconnect with yourself
While we are on the journey of reconnecting with the people around us, it might also be the perfect time to check in with yourself.
Taking time to ask and answer meaningful questions can help you reconnect with your values, reflect on your growth, and rediscover pieces of yourself you may be overlooking in the busyness of life.
So, next time you’re gathered around a dinner table, on a long drive, or even winding down for the night, try asking a question. You might be surprised by what you discover about yourself and others.
