What I Wish I Knew Sooner (So I Could Cut Myself Some Slack)

Date: July 16, 2025

These are just some of the quotes and lessons that have helped me recently.

1. Self-discipline isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about making life easier by removing friction.

We often see self-discipline as sheer willpower, as pushing through, hustling harder and grinding longer.

But what if self-discipline was actually about ease?

What if it meant setting up life to support you, not to stress you?

It’s a hard skill to learn, especially when it looks like everyone else is managing effortlessly. But often, what we’re missing isn’t motivation – it’s clarity and simplicity.

One of the most sustainable ways to start developing this is: decluttering your life to strengthen your self-discipline.

Start by removing the friction that’s quietly draining your energy.

Here are three places to look:

Screen time: Try limiting your phone usage 20-30 minutes before bed. Give your mind time to rest.

Nutrition: Are you eating enough? Are you fuelling your body with food that gives you energy rather than taking it away?

Time: We all say, “I don’t have the time” but if we’re honest, we do. You likely have 30-60 minutes in your day where you can gently start working towards what matters.

    2. Improving yourself is more sustainable than proving yourself to others.

This is a quote I return to again and again.

So often we chase goals to prove something – to our parents, our friends, our followers. But who are we really doing it for? And at what cost?

Working to improve yourself for yourself is the path to true sustainability and authenticity.
You don’t need to perform to earn your place. You deserve to grow on your own terms. For you.

    3. Bravery actually feels like fear.

This one’s tough. None of us want to feel afraid so we seek ways to be comfortable and risk-free.

But if we don’t push ourselves to step out of our comfort zones to do something brave, we will never move forward.

    Whether it’s:

    • Asking a new friend to hang out
    • Asking for a raise
    • Trying something alone for the first time

Fear might still be there. But so will the reward.

Let fear come along for the ride – just don’t let it drive.

    4. Your value isn’t determined by someone’s inability to see your worth.

This is especially important on the path to living more authentically.

When we rely on how other see us to determine our worth, we lose ourselves.

Instead, we need to develop own inner dialogue. One that reflects our values, not just our image.

    Where to start:

    • Ask yourself: What labels have I been given? Which ones do I still carry?
    • Which ones feel true to me – and which ones no longer serve me?
    • How can I honour my core values, even in small ways?

Knowing your worth begins by choosing your own reflection, not someone else’s.

    5. You need to stop waiting to feel ready. Ready is a decision.

We wait for the perfect timing, perfect conditions and perfect confidence. But, we’ll rarely find the optimal conditions. So, decide to start anyway.

If there something you want to do – a dream, a goal or a habit – stop waiting for a sign.

    You make the sign.

    Try this:

    • Write down your goal.
    • Break it into small steps.
    • Pick one and start today.

These quotes and lessons don’t promise perfection… they offer permission: to try, to rest, to begin again.

Some days you’ll smash your goals. Other days you’ll want to crawl back into bed.

    That’s okay.

But if there’s one thing I hope you take away from today, it’s this:

You have the power to change your life. And it starts with one small, intentional step.
