Shut Up Your Mind: Do Something Actually Hard

Date: February 1, 2025

Something hit me during a delightfully hard training this morning, after yesterday’s post about living in our heads. So as a follow up fr all the men who got in touch after that post, I thought I’d share it with those of you who’ve been wrestling with focus, anxiety, and finding your way through the noise.

Picture it, it’s just after midnight and you’re lying there, staring at your ceiling, letting your mind run wild with conversations that haven’t even happened yet. That email from work? You’ve turned it into a fucking war in your head. That simple disagreement? In your mind, it’s now worthy of a goddamn Oscar.

Believe me, I can relate. Because I’ve been there.

Here’s the truth that nobody wants to tell you and that most people don’t want to recognize: You’re making your life a living hell, and it’s not because life is actually that hard. It’s because you’ve forgotten what hard really means.

Look at the blood running through your veins for a second. Your ancestors? They didn’t have time for this mental circus. They were too busy fighting wars with their bare hands, hunting beasts that could tear them apart, building empires from nothing but sweat and raw determination. That same fire is in you right now. But instead of using it, you’re letting it eat you alive from the inside.

Modern life has made us soft. Comfortable. Weak. We’ve got food at our fingertips, climate control at the push of a button, and endless entertainment to numb our minds. And while we’re sitting there in our comfort zone, that primal energy – that warrior spirit – is turning inward, creating chaos in our heads because it has nowhere else to go.

Want to know why you can’t sleep? Why you’re turning basic interactions into mental warfare? Because you need something real to conquer, and instead of finding it, you’re making up battles in your head. You’re literally making your own life harder than it needs to be!

I learned it the hard way – through brutal, physical challenges that stripped away every mental defense I had. When you’re gasping for air, when your muscles are screaming, when you’re pushing yourself to the absolute edge, you know what happens? That voice in your head that’s always creating drama? It shuts the fuck up.

That’s why I’m walking across Greenland. Not because I’m searching for some profound spiritual awakening or I’m crazy. Well, maybe some of those too, but it’s because I know that when you’re doing something genuinely hard, there’s no room left for the mental bullshit that’s keeping you up at night. I experienced it on the ice last year and that feeling, that clarity, that quiet headspace – it’s like a drug!

Here’s your wake-up call:

  1. Move your body until it hurts. I don’t care if that means walking up a hill or training for an ultramarathon. Find your edge and push past it.
  2. Run straight at what scares you. That thing making your stomach turn? That’s your next challenge. Your comfort zone isn’t your friend – it’s your prison.
  3. Show up every damn day. This isn’t about one heroic moment. It’s about building a life that demands more from you than excuses.

Your ancestors didn’t have the luxury of overthinking. Their challenges were real, immediate, and demanded everything they had. That same power is in your blood right now, waiting for you to wake it up.

Stop making up battles in your head because you’re too comfortable to fight real ones. Stop turning simple moments into mental warfare because you’ve forgotten what real challenge feels like.

You don’t need to start with Greenland. Start with whatever makes your heart race and your palms sweat. Start with whatever scares you just enough to know it’s real. But for fuck’s sake, start. Please, just start! And if you don’t know where to start, let me know and I’ll be glad to help!

Because your life doesn’t have to be as hard as you’re making it. You just need to do something that’s actually hard.

Don't forget to be awesome!
