How frequently do you find yourself in dialogue with your inner voices?
Recently, I’ve been engaging in these internal conversations more often, and to say they’ve been interesting would be an understatement.
These mental exchanges have been nothing short of fascinating.
As a part of my training, long sessions of dragging a tyre around provide ample opportunity for both my positive and negative inner voices to vie for attention.
It’s like hosting an internal debate club while getting a workout! And I tell you what, sometimes this internal debate gets pretty damn loud.
Here’s the twist, though: Instead of suppressing those negative voices, brushing them aside, or attempting to overpower them with forced positivity, I’ve taken a different approach. I’ve invited them to the negotiation table, so to speak. I’ve asked them to elaborate on their concerns, to present their case fully.
Now in this post I wrote the following: “By just putting one foot in front of the other again and again and again and again, it seemed that the voices got softer and spoke just a little bit less, and eventually they had nothing left to say.”
For the past few weeks, this has been my strategy for tackling the cacophony of negative inner voices. You know the ones I’m talking about: doubt, guilt, shame, insecurities, lack of confidence, and a whole parade of other unwelcome mental guests. Let’s be honest with each other: if you’re anything like me (and I suspect you are), you’re all too familiar with these uninvited internal critics.
Here’s a fact that I’ve been reminded of during the last few weeks of upping my training and spending a lot of time in my head.
When you do hard things while working towards a goal that means something to you, you turn down the peripheral noise in almost every part of your life.
Your focus sharpens, and suddenly, the negative voices that once seemed so powerful and believable lose their power.
Another thing that I wrote in newsletter #94 was the following: “When all the voices in your head go quiet, you’re left totally present and at peace. It’s a thing of true beauty.”
A few days ago I posted the above message on my Greenland / White Whale channel on Instagram.
One of my mindset and performance coaching clients messaging and asked the following: “Do the voices ever get extinguished with the constant of trying to prove them wrong?”
Absolutely loved the question and the intent behind it and my aunts are back to her the following:
“Negative. Never. You have to start from zero every day. I guess therein lies the challenge that unlocks grit and resilience.”
Silencing those dark, shadow voices in your mind is surprisingly similar to overcoming an addiction. It requires a daily commitment to reinvention: You must consciously kill the old version of yourself every single day in order to move forward.
Is it challenging? Absolutely.
Is it impossible? Not even close.
I’m planning to record a video for my Instagram channel soon. I want to share with you the indescribable peace that comes from quieting those internal critics – a tranquility born from embracing the hard work – and share some practical advice, tips and hopefully some motivation to start working towards this feeling.
It’s something I wish for each and every one of you.
I’ll post this once I find a moment in the coming weeks. But before I wrap up, let me reiterate one crucial point.
When you do hard things while working towards a goal that means something to you, you turn down the peripheral noise in almost every part of your life. It’s amazing!
Are you struggling with persistent negativity? Feeling lost or directionless? Or perhaps those inner voices keep bombarding you with discouraging thoughts? If any of this resonates with you, I’m here to lend an ear.
Whether you want to brainstorm ideas, share your experiences, or simply have a supportive chat, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your journey matters, and sometimes, a conversation can be the first step towards clarity.
And if you’d like a little bush in the right direction, it’s something you can do on your own check out the video I recorded a few days ago by clicking on the image below. #JustStartWalking
