Counter punching

A counterpunch is a boxing punch that immediately follows an attack launched by an opponent.

It exploits the opening created in an opponent’s guard.

Counterpunching is the bridge between boxing offence and boxing defence.

An effective counterpunch can help you regain the initiative and put the fight in your favour.

At all times, you want the initiative.

You want to maintain momentum and control the fight. Counterpunching ensures the fight stays in your corner.

Life is, whether for good or bad, a fight.

You have to fight for things you want.

You have to fight for things you don’t want.

Going into any of these fights just swinging might feel like a good idea.

Sure, you might get lucky.

You might.

Here’s a different strategy.

When you know you’re going into a fight, get ready to take a hit and then counterpunch.

In life we’re going to face tough situations – fights – and that goes for work, relationships, friendships and, well, life in general.

We often, when the shit hits the fan, go on full attack and just throw punches to try and deal with things.

There’s a few problems with that approach which includes:

  • Throwing a too hard, or too soft, punch for the situation.
  • Not hitting your target or hitting the wrong target.
  • You’re gonna leave yourself open to a counter punch.

What about going into a fight – for things you want or don’t want – and take the hit – it’ll hurt less than a punch you don’t see coming cause you can block or deflect it – and then, when you know what you’re dealing with, pick your counterpunch.

Life.

Hard situations.

Challenges.

Obstacles.

Counter punch.

Get it?

Yes, there are most definitely times to go in life when you should go in swinging and punching – and when we talk about goals it’s an approach I like to take – but when you are faced with other challenges / fights / obstacles don’t dismiss the approach of taking the hit and counter punching.

I think you might be surprised as to how this unique skill will benefit you!

Okay, I’ve milked this analogy for long enough so let’s move on. 🥊
