One second can change everything

What was that one second that changed everything for you?

I know you must’ve had a few of them cause it’s a part of this crazy thing called life.

One second, a single moment, where you made a decision. A single moment when something happened. That changed everything.

You see, all too often we think – overthink – things so far into the future that we fail to see that a decision made in a single second can change… everything!

Setting goals, dealing with challenges, figuring out problems, fucking things up, affecting change. Every single one of these things, when you really think about it, can be broken down to a single second where, for good or bad, a decision is made, or not made, that leads to the proverbial shit hitting the fan.

The problem is that we’ve been conditioned to always be better and look ahead and consider the future and be patient and all that.

And yes, there is definite value to all these approaches and mindsets but the success of each of those long term plans can not be decided in the future or down the line or when you get there.

It is the decisions you make in a singular second that will move you towards achieving your goals or avoiding heartache and pain or totally changing the trajectory of your life.

Don’t get it?

Here a a few examples of decisions made in a second that will affect you and how your story plays out.

In a second you can decide to answer that message.

In a second you can decide to not answer that message.

In a second you can decide to go for that jog.

In a second you can decide to reach out to a family member.

In a second you can decide to stand up against your boss.

In a second you can decide to see a therapist or coach.

In a second you can decide to not have another drink.

In a second you can decide to stop drinking.

In a second you can decide that you don’t need that chocolate.

In a second you can decide to not send that email.

In a second you can decide to not react.

In a second you can decide to not have an opinion.

In a second you can decide to book that trip.

In a second you can decide to put yourself first.

In a second you can decide that letting go is better than holding on.

In a second you can decide that holding on is better than letting go.

In a second you can decide that enough is enough.

In a second you can decide to put yourself first.

In a second you can decide that quitting is not an option.

In a second you can decide that you are worth more.

In a second you can decide that that person is worth it.

In a second you can decide to stop.

In a second you can decide that it’s time to harden the fuck up.

In a second you can decide that you’re going to follow your dreams.

I’m sure you can think of a few of your own ones as well.

Seriously, taking on a big new goal, challenge or trying to affect any significant change in your life is very hard if you only keep focusing on the larger, long term demands of what you’re chasing.

As you go through your days, with the goal or change you’re chasing in the back of your mind, be aware of the moments that present themselves where, in a single second, you can make a decision that will get you one step closer.

In a second you can make a decision that will move the needle.

For my coaching clients… a decision that will lead to 1 > 0!

I’ve been reading and researching a lot the last few months. I have a need to learn and understand why we, as people, achieve things or then why we fuck up. Because all of us do both.

Along with a number of other amazing mental focuses and protocols I have been experimenting with the one second decision approach to goals and life in general. And it’s been great to not only move the needle and make me feel like I’m taking control of certain things – one second at a time – but it also makes you more aware and appreciative of the moments that make up life. And that’s a pretty great thing!

More on this, and how you can deploy this protocol in your own life, next year when I’ll be sharing exciting new types of content.

And yes, this is another shorter newsletter but gonna keep this till next week, the last one for the year, and will then pick it up with a new, refreshed look and feel in January.

I’ll still be in the office until 23 December and will be checking mails and messages so if you have a gap I’d love to hear from you.

Tell me how you’re doing and how life is treating you!

Oh and yes, in the image above with the quote I was as cold as I’ve ever been in my life. The cold actually hurt! But it hurt so good! Iceland was amazing!

One second decisions… keep it in mind as you go into the weekend.

Wherever in the world you are, stay safe and don’t forget to be awesome!
